Stereo imaging describes how sounds appear to be positioned between the left and right speakers. A well-balanced stereo system can create a stable phantom center and allow sounds to appear at different locations across the stereo field.
This tool provides several listening tests inspired by the types of stereo-image checks commonly used in audio monitoring. The Phantom Center test checks whether a centered signal appears to come directly from the middle. The localization tests help you evaluate whether sounds remain clearly positioned toward the correct speaker.
The width and movement tests can also help reveal problems such as incorrect speaker placement, channel imbalance, polarity problems, or unusual stereo processing.
🔊 How To Use It
Sit in your normal listening position, ideally centered between the left and right speakers. Start with the volume low and select Phantom Center.
The tone should appear to come from a point directly between the speakers rather than clearly from the left or right speaker. If the center appears shifted, check your speaker placement, monitor levels, room reflections, and channel routing.
Next, try the left and right localization tests. The signal should appear to move toward the appropriate side of the stereo field.
💡 Tip: Stereo imaging is strongly affected by your listening position. For speaker testing, form an approximately equal-sided triangle between yourself and the two speakers, with the tweeters aimed appropriately toward the listening position. Keep the left and right speaker levels matched before evaluating imaging. -

Stereo imaging describes how accurately an audio system creates the perception of sounds positioned between the left and right speakers. A properly positioned stereo system should generally produce a stable phantom center, meaning a centered signal appears to come from directly between the speakers rather than obviously from one side.
This tool includes several listening modes. Phantom Center tests whether a centered signal appears to come from the middle, while the Left Localization and Right Localization tests help determine whether each channel is being perceived from the appropriate side. The Left → Right Movement test provides a moving signal that can reveal inconsistencies in the stereo field.
Stereo imaging can be affected by speaker placement, listening position, room reflections, channel-level differences, speaker polarity, phase relationships, and delays. Because of this, an unusual result doesn't necessarily mean your speakers are defective.
Tip: For speaker testing, sit centered between your monitors and form an approximately equal-sided triangle between your listening position and the two speakers. Match your left and right monitor levels before evaluating the stereo image. If the phantom center consistently pulls toward one side, check your speaker positioning, channel balance, cables, interface routing, and room acoustics.
