    My History With Songwriting

I absolutely love the process of songwriting. Over the last 20 years or so, I've written a ton of songs. By a lot, I mean hundreds of songs. Some for my own project releases, much more work for hire projects, and even more projects that I've yet to decide what to do with!

It all started at the mere age of 10 in my old family home. I grew up in a singing household with siblings and parents who loved performing and creating beautiful music, mostly in church or competitive settings. My father has always been a worship leader at our church, my sister has always been the cool jazz performer who entered into local and national competitions from Showtime and the Apollo to American Idol, and I was just the young eager kid soaking it all in.

My parents could see how eager I was, so they decided to try something new and enroll me into performance arts schools through Middle and High School. There, I honed my skills technically and creatively, growing from a shaky singer and writer to the talk of the (small school) town with my vocal abilities and original tunes on Myspace!

Throughout high school and college, the social media side of the internet was in the beginning stages of booming beyond you could ever imagine, and I was constantly connecting with artists from all around the world.

How I Can Be Your Songwriting For Hire

In my early writing years, I would find gigs and connections through classified posts on sites like Craigslist and MusiciansPage. More recently, I've decided to fully delve into singing and writing on work for hire projects full time with Freelance sites like Fiverr and Airgigs.

I've written music in many popular genres that include R&B, Pop, Gospel, Hip Hop, EDM, House, Jazz, Funk, and much more. I'm pretty sure I'll be writing songs for the rest of my life, and I'm totally okay with that.

If you're looking for some help with song structure, melodic ideas, lyrics, or vocal production, I can help you take your music project to the next level with fresh ideas!

Some of My Favorite Songwriting Examples

While I tend to enjoy the challenge of any project I lend my expertise to, there are some projects that really stand out to me as some of my best writing work. I'd like to show you a few of them to give you a good idea of what I can offer you.

    Genre: Neo-Soul

This song is near and dear to my heart as my favorite neo-soul song that I've written thus far. I wrote this song right after changing my name from Rachel Marie to Yona Marie for branding reasons. I wanted to come to the game hard and strong as a singer with virtually no previous release history.

    Genre: Future-Soul

Speaking of name changes, this is my ultimate favorite song that I've written under my old name, Rachel Marie. This is also the song that went the most viral under my old name! I was hugely blessed to come randomly across the talented and epic producer Eli Way and Night Owl Collective label on Soundcloud while I was simply searching for new music to dance to during my workouts.

    Genre: House
I've been writing at least one House song a month these days, but nothing gets stuck in my head like this one called "Green Lights" that I did with Neil Chin. I think I really love this example of songwriting because I was really able to put myself in the world of these lyrics to make them pop. I was in the very early stages of new love and always just wanted to get back to being in his space :)
