Bit depth determines how many possible amplitude values are available for representing each digital audio sample.
Increasing bit depth increases the theoretical dynamic range and reduces quantization noise. This is different from sample rate, which determines how frequently the audio waveform is sampled.
For typical music production, 24-bit recording provides substantially more practical headroom than 16-bit recording during the recording and mixing process.
Important: The dynamic-range figures above are theoretical maximums based on approximately 6.02 dB per bit.
