An Audio Clipping Detector can help musicians, singers, producers, podcasters, and home-studio users identify potential digital clipping while recording or monitoring audio. The tool uses your computer's microphone input to analyze the incoming waveform and watch for peaks approaching the maximum digital level.
In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the maximum representable sample level. When a signal is pushed beyond the available digital range, the waveform can become clipped, producing unwanted distortion. Clipping can happen when recording a vocal, instrument, microphone, or other source, as well as later in a mixing or mastering signal chain.
One important thing to remember is that turning down a clipped recording afterward does not undo the clipping. If the waveform was already distorted when it was recorded, lowering its volume only makes the distorted signal quieter. The better solution is to reduce the input gain before recording.
The detector also looks at peaks approaching 0 dBFS. This can be useful because you don't necessarily want your recording to repeatedly slam against the digital ceiling. Leaving reasonable headroom gives unexpected peaks room to occur without immediately causing clipping.
Tip: If you're recording vocals or instruments and the detector repeatedly shows peaks close to 0 dBFS, turn down the input gain on your audio interface or microphone preamp. Don't rely on lowering the track fader in your DAWβthe fader comes after the recording has already been captured.
Important: Browser microphone processing, audio-interface drivers, operating-system settings, and your device can affect what the detector sees. For critical recording and mastering work, use your DAW's peak meter alongside this tool.
