A Camelot Wheel Tool can help DJs, producers, and music enthusiasts find compatible keys for harmonic mixing that is based on the circle of fifths. By entering the musical key or Camelot code of a song, you can quickly identify nearby keys that may create smoother transitions between tracks.
The Camelot system uses numbers from 1–12 combined with A or B. The A side generally represents minor keys, while the B side represents major keys. Moving between neighboring numbers, such as 8A → 7A or 8A → 9A, keeps the mix within closely related keys. Moving between the same number on opposite sides, such as 8A → 8B, switches between relative minor and major.
DJs can use harmonic mixing to create transitions that sound more musically connected, particularly during long blends, mashups, vocal transitions, live sets, and melodic house, EDM, R&B, hip-hop, pop, and other key-driven genres.
Tip: Harmonic compatibility is a useful starting point, but it isn't a rule that every DJ has to follow. Rhythm, arrangement, vocals, basslines, energy, tempo, and the overall musical context can be just as important. Sometimes a deliberately incompatible key change can create a dramatic effect.
Important: The Camelot Wheel is a simplified representation of harmonic relationships. Real-world songs can contain key changes, modal passages, ambiguous tonal centers, or notes outside their primary key, so always use your ears when deciding whether two tracks actually work together.
