    Why can one group of notes have multiple chord names?

    A group of notes can often be interpreted in more than one way depending on which note functions as the root.

    For example, C, E and G can clearly form C Major. However, the same three notes can also appear as part of other harmonic structures depending on the musical context.

    If you're using the chord in a song, the melody, bass note, previous chord and following chord can help determine which interpretation makes the most musical sense.
