A Gain Staging Calculator can help musicians, producers, recording engineers, and home-studio users understand how much level to send between different stages of an audio signal chain. Proper gain staging can help prevent unwanted clipping and noise while giving plugins, processors, interfaces, and other equipment an appropriate signal level to work with.
One important concept is that gain staging isn't simply about making everything as loud as possible. Increasing the level at one stage of your signal chain can cause the next plugin or piece of equipment to receive a signal that is unnecessarily hot. This can result in clipping or unintended saturation, particularly with plugins that respond differently depending on their input level.
When recording, leave enough headroom between your average recording level and 0 dBFS. Digital audio cannot exceed 0 dBFS without clipping, so recording with reasonable headroom gives you room for unexpected peaks.
It's also helpful to distinguish between input gain and output volume. Increasing a plugin's input can change how the processor reacts, while increasing its output primarily changes the level being sent to the next stage.
A well-gain-staged mix doesn't necessarily have to hit a specific number at every point. Different workflows and analog-modeling plugins may have different preferred operating levels.
Tip: If you're unsure where to start, avoid recording extremely close to 0 dBFS. Aim for healthy levels with plenty of headroom, then adjust individual stages of your signal chain while listening for clipping, noise, distortion, and unwanted changes in tone. Gain staging is about maintaining control of the signal—not chasing one “perfect” meter reading.
