In Western chromatic music, a semitone is the distance between two adjacent notes on a piano keyboard, such as C to C♯ or E to F. There are 12 semitones in an octave.
Semitone calculations are particularly useful when transposing songs, changing keys, adjusting vocal melodies, analyzing intervals, programming MIDI, and working with samples. For example, moving a melody up 3 semitones changes every note by the same chromatic distance while preserving the melodic interval relationships.

Tip: When transposing a song, remember that every note needs to move by the same number of semitones. For example, transposing a song 2 semitones higher moves C to D, E to F♯, and G to A. This is useful for adjusting a song to better fit a singer's vocal range.
