    How does the Song Split Sheet Generator work?

    Enter the song information and add each songwriter or composition owner involved in the collaboration. For each person, you can record their role, performing rights organization, IPI/CAE number, publisher, and agreed ownership percentage.

    The calculator automatically adds the ownership percentages together. A completed composition split should normally total 100%. Once the information is complete, generate the split sheet to create a clean record that collaborators can review and retain.
    Tip: Discuss songwriting splits as early as possible. It is usually easier to resolve ownership percentages while everyone still remembers exactly how the song was created than months later when the song is being released, registered, licensed, or generating royalties.

    When multiple people help write a song, it is important to establish who owns what percentage of the composition. A split sheet creates a written record of the percentages the collaborators have agreed to rather than relying only on conversations or memories of the writing session.

    Enter the song title, creation date, artist or project name, and each collaborator involved in the composition. For every writer, you can include their legal name, role, performing rights organization (PRO), IPI/CAE number, publisher, contact information, and ownership percentage.

    The generator automatically adds all of the ownership percentages together so you can quickly see whether the composition totals 100%. For example, two equal collaborators might agree to 50% each, while four equal writers might receive 25% each. Collaborators can also agree to unequal percentages when that reflects their arrangement.

    Roles can include songwriter, composer, lyricist, producer/writer, topliner, or another contributor who has been given an ownership interest in the composition. A person's creative role does not by itself determine a universal percentage, so collaborators should agree on the splits that apply to their particular song.

    You can also record each writer's PRO and IPI/CAE information. These details can make it easier to identify the correct writers when the composition is later registered with performing rights organizations, publishers, administrators, or other music-rights services.

    Once all of the information has been entered, generate the completed split sheet and review it carefully. The printable version includes signature and date lines so collaborators can maintain a clear record of what was agreed.

    Keep in mind that a songwriting split sheet primarily documents ownership of the composition. It should not automatically be interpreted as determining ownership of the master recording, producer points, featured-artist royalties, work-for-hire arrangements, sample clearances, advances, neighboring rights, or every other right associated with a music release. Those issues may require separate agreements.

    A split sheet is especially useful when working on collaborative songwriting sessions, producer sessions, co-writing sessions, songwriting camps, remote collaborations, and independent music releases.

    Tip: Don't wait until a song starts gaining attention to discuss the splits. Try to confirm songwriting ownership while the collaboration is still fresh in everyone's mind. Before releasing or registering the song, make sure the names, percentages, publisher information, and other details on the split sheet match what everyone actually agreed to.
