The harmonic series is one of the foundations for understanding timbre, resonance, overtones, tuning, and why different instruments can play the same note but sound completely different.

    The harmonic series begins with the fundamental frequency, which is considered the first harmonic. The second harmonic is twice the fundamental frequency, the third harmonic is three times the fundamental, the fourth is four times the fundamental, and so on. These harmonics help explain why different instruments can play the same fundamental note while producing completely different timbres.

    The lower harmonics are especially useful for understanding familiar musical relationships. For example, the 2nd harmonic is one octave above the fundamental, the 3rd harmonic relates to a perfect fifth, and the 5th harmonic introduces a major-third relationship.
