Is AI Taking Music And Art Jobs?

The Slick Dangers Of AI Disguised As Innovation

AI can automate tasks that traditionally required a lot of manual effort. While this sounds lovely, it is also giving me anxiety.

For example, AI tools can generate music compositions, create visual art, or edit photos and videos more quickly than humans can. This efficiency reduces the need for human labor in certain areas.

Like many, I was tuned into the Kendrick vs. Drake battle that happened recently. I recently found out the BBL Drizzy voice was actually an AI singer, like other AI-generated music technologies, that poses potential risks to session singers and the broader music industry.

AI-generated music can create compositions, vocals, and even entire songs without the need for human performers.

Why didn't the guy who created that song just hire a real singer?

Also, using AI can be more cost-effective for businesses and individuals. Hiring AI to perform tasks can be cheaper than hiring a human artist or musician, especially for repetitive or less complex tasks.

AI can create highly personalized and customized art and music based on user preferences. This capability is particularly attractive for marketing, advertising, and entertainment industries, where personalized content can drive engagement and sales.

I've noticed that AI makes it easier for people without formal training in art or music to create and produce high-quality work. This availability of creative tools allows more people to participate in these fields, although it also increases competition.

For example, as a session singer, my clients may be more inclined to use AI for their songwriting and production ideas rather than hire me or a worker like me.

There is a growing demand for fast and diverse content creation, especially in the digital age where social media, streaming services, and online platforms thrive on a constant influx of new material. AI can meet this demand more readily than human creators can.

The Hopeful Part

Despite these scary impacts, session musicians still hold an important place in the music industry. Here are a few reasons why their roles remain valuable:

Human Touch: Human musicians bring a unique touch, emotion, and expressiveness to their performances that AI often cannot fully replicate. This human element is crucial for certain genres and styles of music.

Live Performances: Session musicians are essential for live performances, tours, and recordings that require a live band or orchestra. AI cannot replace the experience and interaction of live music.

Collaboration and Creativity: Musicians bring their creativity, intuition, and personal style to a project, contributing to a unique and collaborative process that AI cannot fully emulate.

Niche and Specialized Skills: Some musical skills and techniques are highly specialized and require years of practice. Session musicians with these niche skills are still in demand for projects that require a high level of expertise.

Cultural and Authenticity Factors: For music that involves traditional, cultural, or regional elements, the authenticity brought by skilled musicians who are well-versed in these styles is irreplaceable by AI.

While AI is making significant inroads into creative arts, I would much rather the world focus on its potential be applied to many helpful and practical fields, such as:

Healthcare: AI is used for diagnosing diseases, predicting patient outcomes, personalizing treatment plans, and assisting in medical research.

Agriculture: AI helps optimize crop yields, monitor plant health, and manage resources more efficiently.

Transportation: AI powers autonomous vehicles, improves traffic management, and enhances logistics and supply chain operations.

Customer Service: AI chatbots and virtual assistants provide efficient customer support and handle routine inquiries.

Manufacturing: AI optimizes production processes, predicts equipment failures, and enhances quality control.

Environmental Monitoring: AI helps track environmental changes, predict natural disasters, and develop sustainable practices.
