This hit song's popularity has endured over the years and has been stuck in my brain, remaining one of the 2000s most iconic rock tracks, in my opinion.
Its emotional resonance and relatable lyrics have made it a favorite among listeners and have contributed to its lasting impact on popular culture.
Funny enough, I first heard it when Blake Lewis sang it on one of the early seasons of American Idol. On top of that, the song has been covered by various artists over the years, including Lily Allen and Max Schneider.
One of my favorite covers was by the Glee cast, which introduced the song to a new generation of listeners.
With its melodic piano-driven arrangement, emotive vocals by Tom Chaplin, and powerful yet soft rock sound, it's the quintessential song for getting you deep in your feelings. But what is the meaning behind the heartfelt lyrics?
Keane consists of Tom Chaplin (lead vocals), Tim Rice-Oxley (piano, keyboards, vocals), Richard Hughes (drums, percussion, vocals), and Jesse Quin (bass guitar, percussion, vocals, additional keyboards).
Tim Rice-Oxley wrote the song's lyrics and melodic outline with a demo, and the band collaborated to create its overall sound that gives you intensely emotional piano rock.

In an interview with Billboard, Oxley said, "I was thinking of something like David Bowie's "Heroes", which you drive along to a really rocking beat ... It was one of the first things we recorded for the album."
Many people think that this song is about a very specific type of relationship where you long for a lover, but part of the beauty of the song is how much its general lyrics can relate to tons of different types of relationships.
"There are loads of internet theories about what ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ means but I always thought that it is about a place where we grew up – and a longing for something pure and simple,” Chaplin says in a more recent interview with The Guardian.
"My mum and dad ran a school, and we used to sit in the grounds as teenagers, smoking weed and hanging out: I always thought about that place when I sang the song. To me, it’s about us as friends and a band, growing up."
While the song seems to lean towards relationships and experiences shared between people, it could even be more broader than that, depending on how the song hits you personally.
"It's about being able to draw strength from a place or experience you've shared with someone. I think it's an idea a lot of people can relate to," Oxley told UK paper The Mirror.
I walked across an empty landI knew the pathway like the back of my handI felt the earth beneath my feetSat by the river and it made me complete
The opening lyrics really bring home the fact that this masterpiece doesn't necessarily speak of a relationship between people. Tim was getting most of his emotional resonance from the place where he has fond memories, not necessarily people.

This is where a longing shared between people may be present in the lyrics, but the identity of the individuals represented by "we" is intentionally left vague, allowing the listener to interpret the song in a way that is meaningful to them.
