SEO Tips For Musicians With Websites

SEO For Musicians

Running a website that focuses on your music brand can open a lot of new doors when it comes to marketing and advertising opportunities for your music.

If you don't already have a site, I strongly suggest that you sign up for a simple resource like Bandzoogle or Wix that can get a site up and running for you within a day.

Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is the process of making your website more discoverable in google searches and getting more traffic.

When you get more traffic to your site as a business or a brand, you can gain more success in marketing and sales. Most musicians don't even have a website, so they completely miss out on the benefits of what SEO can do for them.

Make Your Site Rank High For Your Brand Terms

When you can rank your website as a top search result for those who are searching for you, you'll have full control over what people interested in your brand can do to find out more about you.

For example, if you have a website, you can add a newsletter for people to sign up for and connect more directly with your audience for new releases.

If your song releases are also available on your website and show up when people are searching for you, you can also add more links alongside their listening process that can encourage them to buy your songs or your merch.

The main brand terms that you will want to include on your website so that you can have high visibility will include keywords like "your name + new song" or "your name + contact".

Be sure to add pages with the keywords you want to rank for in your title and headers.

Use Music Industry Keywords For Visibility

In addition to ranking for your own brand terms, you should also consider ranking for more general and competitive terms like "singers in the __ area" or "unsigned rappers in __".

Most musicians don't know about the power of SEO for marketing, so the competition for some keywords that you will want to rank for won't be as hard as you think it would.

Again, you'll need to create pages with these keywords in your title and headers. Make great pages with relevant and high-quality content; don't just add the page with the title and header but nothing of value!

Consider Adding A Blog To Your Site

The more content you have on your website, the more visibility you can get through search engines with SEO.

Many brands and businesses include a blog on their website and their services and products to catch the attention of people in their niche with helpful and entertaining content.

If you're a singer, consider starting a blog and including video or audio content in addition to written content that tells about the life of a singer and all of the fun experiences you go through.

If you're in a band, consider making a blog about your most crazy tour experiences and the music industry's secrets.

The more you write, the more search engines like Google pick up on your content and rank it for keywords that many people are typing in.

Get Other Websites To Link To You

One key part of SEO is getting other sites to link to your site in order to build domain authority. As a musician, it can be hard to find other sites to link to you since not that many other musicians have websites.

While you may not be able to find musicians with sites, you can find media outlets like music blogs and magazines that may be interested in covering you as a featured artist and including a link to your website in their posts about you.

Some sites provide featured blog reviews, while others are band/artist listings like Mary4Music that can help you get visibility.

Add Your Website To Your Socials

While you want to get links from other website owners, it also helps to link your own social media pages to your website as well.

Leaving a link to your website on your Facebook fan page, Twitter Profile, Soundcloud profile, Reverbnation account, Instagram, Tik-Tok, and many other sites will help you gain a small amount of authority in the eyes of Google and other search engines.

Use Google Search Console

Google has a free tool called "Google Search Console" that will help you track the progress of your SEO efforts. Here, you will see what websites have linked to your website, what keywords your website is ranking for, and much more.

When you can see the progress you are making with these stats, you can optimize and tweak your efforts to gain more visibility over time.

Do note that it takes some time for Google to recognize your website and your new pages and blogs, especially if you have a brand-new website. Visit Google's Search Console here.
